Online Lecture: Dr Timon Screech “Ceremonies of Light at Nikkô”
It is well known that Tokugawa was deified upon his death in 1616, and that a shrine to him built among the religious institutions in the holy mountains of Nikkô. As is also common knowledge, these were rebuilt for the 20th anniversary of his death into the sumptuous complex that exits today. This talk will introduce these events, but will go further in looking at the shrine-temple complex from the standpoint of its name -nikkô means ‘sunlight’. How and why were metaphors of illumination used, and what did they mean, not least as the imperial line had long monopolised the mythology of solar kingship.
