all in all the event bustled with people, both adults and children.\u00a0 On a specially erected stage, a <em>taiko<\/em> drum performance, an information session promoting Hokkaido held by local government officials, a demonstration of the wearing of kimono and yukata, a screening of a Japanese film, and of a Japanese anime, were observed with much acclaim by the Russian audience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify\"><span style=\"color:#000000\">Together with Japanese students and a Russian teacher and some Russian friends of mine, we performed as an ensemble, using Japanese traditional instruments, and played <em>Sakura Sakura<\/em> and <em>Itsumo Nandodemo<\/em>.\u00a0 At TUFS, I am a member of the Japanese traditional instrument club called<em> Hakugakai<\/em>, where I play the shamisen.\u00a0 I brought my own instrument with me to St. Petersburg, so it was a great joy for me to have this opportunity to play it publicly.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color:#000000\"> Since coming to St. Petersburg, I have participated in Japanese traditional instrument sessions once a week at a Japanese Language center in the center of town.\u00a0 There are two Japanese people who participate: I myself play the shamisen, and a friend of mine plays the koto.\u00a0 In addition, we have Russians who accompany us on the shamisen and the shakuhachi, a kind of bamboo flute.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_575\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-575\" style=\"width: 257px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-575\" src=\"https:\/\/wp.tufs.ac.jp\/russia-en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2020\/02\/e794bbe5838f12.png\" alt=\"\u753b\u50cf12\" width=\"257\" height=\"185\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wp.tufs.ac.jp\/russia-en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2020\/02\/e794bbe5838f12.png 381w, https:\/\/wp.tufs.ac.jp\/russia-en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2020\/02\/e794bbe5838f12-300x217.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 257px) 100vw, 257px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-575\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><\/span> <span style=\"color:#000000\">Ms. Tsuchida (left)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify\"><span style=\"color:#000000\">The Japanese Center frequently holds events related to introducing Japanese culture.\u00a0 On November 24, the center held an event entitled the <em>Japanese Autumn<\/em>, which featured recitations of <em>Waka<\/em> by Russian students of Japanese, demonstrations of Cat\u2019s Cradle, a quiz, and other activities. \u00a0At this event, like in the aforementioned <em>Japanese Day in St. Petersburg<\/em>, a performance of Japanese traditional instruments, namely the shamisen and the koto, was held.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify\"><span style=\"color:#000000\">I participated in this event as well, as an instrumentalist, and was amazed at how many people there are in Russia who hold an interest in Japanese culture.\u00a0 Some of them seemed to know more about Japanese culture than most Japanese would!\u00a0 Upon entering the venue, while holding my instrument, I was met with an assortment of comments, most notable were comments by Russians who said they had seen shamisen in photographs, but had never seen them with their own eyes before, nor heard them played.\u00a0 A number of people also commented on just how few shamisen players there are in St. Petersburg.\u00a0 Hearing these comments impressed upon me that though in the information age it may be easy to access information pertaining to one\u2019s interests, it can still be difficult to see and to touch the object of one\u2019s interests in real life.\u00a0 I certainly intend to look for more such events to participate in, and to use Japanese traditional instruments as a stepping stone to fostering an interest in Japanese culture on the part of Russians.\u00a0 I also look forward to more opportunities for cultural exchange.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify\">\n<span style=\"color:#000000\"> Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, School of Language and Culture Studies, Russian department, 3<sup>rd<\/sup> year<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color:#000000\"> On exchange in St. Petersburg<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color:#000000\"> Tsuchida Makiko<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tsuchida Makiko, a TUFS student currently on an exchange program at Saint Petersburg State University, partici&hellip;
