On Wednesday, November 6, 2019, the COIL-type synchronous session on culture, learning and technology was held between three classes of Prof. Jung Insung of International Christian University (ICU), Prof. Fernando Rodriguez of University of California, Irvine (UCI) and Aya Fukuda of Tokyo University of Foreign Studies (TUFS).
Before the synchronous session, there were asynchronous sessions for a week between the students from three universities. There were mainly two activities held in the asynchronous sessions. The first was that students shared their own weblog about use of technology in daily life and discussed the differences that they noticed. The second was that students debated on advantages/disadvantages of online learning and how to improve it with consideration on local culture. In the synchronous session, students further exchanged their ideas which they found interesting in the asynchronous sessions.
After the sessions, Prof. Rodriguez of UCI and three students who participated in the sessions visited Japan in January. UCI, ICU and TUFS had a face-to-face discussion more deeply, and students got to know each other better.
