On Tuesday November 26, 2019, the COIL-type synchronous session on film was held between classes of Prof. Iris Haukamp of Tokyo University of Foreign Studies (TUFS) and Prof. John Kim of University of California, Riverside (UCR). The class of Prof. Haukamp was about Japanese wartime films and the society, and the class of Prof. Kim was about Germany. Students in both classes watched a film which was co-produced by Japan and Germany just before World War II and had discussion focused on the anesthetization of the nation and how the empire is discussed in the film, both from a formal and a narrative point of view. This dynamic learning environment materialized discussion on film and its contexts of movie from different points of view and enriched students’ learning, but also exposed them to different approaches and viewpoints with which both groups engaged in a very constructive manner.
