Online TUFS Japan-Russia Summer School 2021
The 2021 TUFS Japan-Russia Summer School was successfully conducted for two weeks, starting on the 23rd of August. As in 2020, it was conducted online in order to avoid contributing to the spreading of the corona virus, and featured such activities as tandem learning, international Japanese studies, and a subtitling workshop. Four TUFS students participate in the 2nd Japan-Russia Student Forum
Following the first Japan-Russia student Forum, which was held in May, 2018 in Sapporo, the second forum was held in September, 2019 at Moscow State University. A cumulative total of 57 students from universities affiliated with the Association of Institutions of Higher Education of the Russian Federation and Japan, including 4 TUFS students, participated in the forum. TUFS participates in the 2nd General Meeting of the Association of Institutions of Higher Education of the Russian Federation and Japan in Moscow
The 2nd General Meeting of the Association of Institutions of Higher Education of the Russian Federation and Japan was held in Moscow, concurrently with the 8th Russian-Japanese Forum of Rectors. TUFS was represented by Vice President Jun Matsukuma, Professor Shigeru Arai, and Yoko Shiga of the TUFS High-School-University Coordination Support Office. Read more

TUFS participates in Study in Japan Fair in Moscow
A Study in Japan Fair was held in Moscow in 2019. Yoko Shiga, who works at the TUFS High-School-University Coordination Support Office (高大連携支援室), represented TUFS at this fair. This year’s fair was attended by 140 Russian students; ten times the number who attended last year. The presentations were followed by lively question-and-answer sessions.
Professor Hirofumi Kato of Hokkaido University and Minister Toshio Yamamoto of the Embassy of Japan in Russia gave opening remarks, which were followed by presentations on the systems used in Japanese universities, visa issues, and other matters of import to exchange students, as well as presentations by three students with experience studying in Japan. TUFS Global Community Meeting
On the 21st of September, 2019, a TUFS Global Community Meeting was held in Moscow, at the Mitsui Club. This was the third such meeting.
Participants associated with TUFS included Vice President Jun Matsukuma and Professor Shigeru Arai, as well members of the Moscow branch of the alumni association, and TUFS students studying at partner universities in Moscow. Russian students and graduates who have experience studying at TUFS, as well as the local coordinator, also participated. Read more

Russo-Japanese Business Summer School 2019
The 2019 Japan-Russia business Summer School was held at TUFS for two weeks starting on Monday, the 22nd of July. In the questionnaire distributed afterwards, all participants reported that they would recommend the program to others, of whom 95% said that they would definitely recommend it to others. Such results reflect how satisfactory the program was this year. Read more

Meeting with six Russian Partner-Universities
In the middle March, Program Coordinator Professor Arai Shigeru visited Russia. On the 11th he visited St. Petersburg State University, from the 12th to the 14th he visited Moscow State Institute of International Relations, Russian State University for the Humanities, Moscow State University, and National Research University Higher School of Economics, and finally on the 22nd he visited Far Eastern Federal University, where he met with school officials and discussed the Inter-University Exchange Project (Russia) conducted by TUFS. Professor Arai reported on the overall progress of the program, with particular emphasis on the Russo-Japanese Business Summer School held in July. This included an explanation of the schedule and the contents of this year’s summer school. He also made note of the fact that next year, due to the Tokyo Summer Olympics, the summer school schedule will have to be adjusted. In addition, he engaged in information-sharing with the Russian school officials regarding the credits Russian exchange students earn at TUFS, and how they transfer those credits to their home universities in Russia. It was clearly a valuable opportunity for both TUFS and its partner universities in Russia.

Second External Review Committee and Expert Conference
The Second External Review Committee and Expert Conference was held to discuss “TUFS Japan-Russia Student Mobility Program: Creating Business Networks and Fostering Human Interaction” conducted by The Inter-University Exchange Project (Russia).
The committee, which is an outside body, provides evaluation of the TUFS Japan-Russia Student Mobility Program, in the hope of providing ideas for ways to improve the program. During this session, there were three members present: Kobayashi Fumihiko, Managing Director of the Itochu Group, Sato Junichi, professor emeritus at Tokyo University, and Kumabe Kensaku, Managing Director at Russia-Eurasia Politics Economics and Business Research Institute. A remaining two members were absent, due to other engagements. They are Umezu Tetsuya, Manager of Overseas Research in Russia and the CIS at JETRO, and Hattori Michitaka, Assistant Director for the Russia-NIS Economic Research Department of the Japan Association for Trade with Russia and NIS. Attendance at the First IAG Conference
The First Meeting of the Japan Russia Industry, Academia, and Government Working-Level Conference (IAG Conference) was held Three members of the TUFS Office for International Affairs were in attendance, namely Professor Numano Kyoko (who has spearheaded this project), Program Coordinator Arai Shigeru, and Mr. Iwata Yoshihisa. Three exchange students studying at TUFS were invited to participate in an international-understanding class for 4th-graders taught at Wakabadai Elementary School in the city of Inagi. Utilizing a conversation format, the exchange students dialogued with approximately 100 elementary students about the Russian language, its geography, food, and lifestyle, with the opportunity for intercultural interaction. 4 Students who participated in the 1-Day Sony Internship
Since 2015, for the past four years, the Inter-University Exchange Project has designated TUFS as a one of its partner universities.* Twenty three exchange students at TUFS, who were able to engage in exchange abroad through the support of the Inter-University Exchange Project Branch Office in their home countries, visited the home office of Sony, Inc. (located in Konan district, Minato Ward, Tokyo), a business conglomerate devoted to international business expansion, and learned about their business operations.

Russo-Japanese Exchange Meeting
At the invitation of the Japan Russia Youth Exchange Center, fifty six Russian students who are currently studying Japanese came to visit TUFS and participate in an exchange meeting. Approximately fifty TUFS students who are majoring in Russian, including students invited by the TUFS Student Mobility Program (Russia). Read more

Report on the experience of exchange students
At the annual ‘Exchange Fair,’ students majoring in Russian reporting on their experiences studying abroad, with a focus on crisis management. Oikawa Yui, a junior from the College of Language and Culture who is majoring in Russian described her long-term exchange at St. Petersburg State University.

Russo-Japanese Business Summer School held
From Tuesday, the 17th of July, 2018, to Friday the 27th, Tokyo University of Foreign Studies (TUFS), held a two-week summer school program, providing the opportunity for 29 Russian students, from 6 partner universities in Russia to interact with TUFS students, and to take intensive courses on Japanese language, and Japanese studies. Talks with HSE Representatives
On the 11th of June, 2018, Professor Maxim Bratersky, Associate Professor Uliana Strizhak, research fellow Mr. Andrei Skriba, of the Higher School of Economics of National Research University (HSE), visited TUFS for talks with Executive Director and Vice President Kayoko Hayashi, Professor Kyoko Numano, Professor Yoshikazu Suzuki, and Professor Shigeru Arai. The talks centered on the implementation of a joint degree offered by HSE and TUFS, as well as short-term exchange programs to be offered in summer quarter and winter quarter. Read more

Participation in the 1st General Meeting of the Japan-Russia University Association and the Japan-Russia Student Forum
The first General Assembly Meeting of the Association of Institutions of Higher Education of the Russian Federation and Japan (the 7th Japanese-Russian Forum of University Rectors) and a Japan-Russia Student Forum were held at Hokkaido University and at a hotel in the city of Sapporo, Hokkaido Prefecture, from Friday, May 18, to Sunday, May 20. TUFS Japan-Russia Business Network took place in Vladivostok on Tuesday, March 23, 2018. This was a meeting organized for the first time by United for TUFS on the occasion of the visit to Vladivostok by a delegation led by Professor Kyoko Numano, Project Leader, to hold discussions with local partners (Far Eastern Federal University and Japanese organizations and companies). A seminar was held with a lecture by Associate Professor Liala Khronopulo of Saint Petersburg State University.
On February 14 (Wednesday), the seminar “Research History of the Japanese Language and Literature in Russia: research on Short-Short Story” was held. It consisted mainly of a lecture by Associate Professor Liala Khronopulo of Saint Petersburg State University at Institute of Transcultural Studies, Tokyo University of Foreign Studies. Read more

Commemorative Lecture of the Inter-University Exchange Project (Russia)
On Thursday, January 11, 2018, a lecture titled “You Are Future Leaders Supporting Japan-Russia Economic Relations” was held to commemorate the selection of TUFS as a university participating in the Inter-University Exchange Project (FY2017). The lecturer was Mr. Hiroshi Meguro, who is a TUFS graduate from Russian Department and serves as Managing Officer and Deputy Chief Administrative Officer (in charge of HQ Overseen Region) at Mitsui & Co. Travelogue on University/Company Visits under “Inter-University Exchange Project (Russia)”
In order to implement the “Inter-University Exchange Project (Russia)” smoothly, Prof. Kyoko Numano, the project leader, and Prof. Shigeru Arai, the project coordinator, visited five of the six partner institutions involved in the project in Russia in November 2017 and sought further understanding of and cooperation for the TUFS project. Expansion and Support of the TUFS Japan-Russia Business Network through TUFS Global Community Meeting in Moscow
On November 25, 2017, TUFS Global Community meeting was held in Moscow. This is the second time since 2014 that Moscow has hosted the Global Community meeting. The meeting was held on the occasion of a TUFS delegation visit to Moscow following its selection as one of the universities participating in FY2017 Inter-University Exchange Project (Russia) funded by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.
